A unicorn is said to be magical, innocent and rare. They are associated with a vibrant imagination and a sense of wonder. I wouldn’t have picked a better theme to represent my daughter for her 4th birthday. She chose her theme and stuck with it for nearly a year. She talked about her cake every single day up until her birthday and I was on pins and needles just waiting to spoil her with a day filled of all the special things she loves.
Now, the idea that a unicorn is very rare is quite symbolic to her. My husband has a family of mostly boys and I am an only child. It was said that my chances of having a girl was rare. I thought any baby was a gift that in itself. My first baby was a gorgeous boy and then I was blessed with my first little girl. Giuliana is my little firecracker. She is quiet but fierce and she loves with all she has. She cares so deeply for those she loves. She studies me in every way as I bake, do projects and loves to be creative. She wants to be right alongside me shadowing my every move. She has been incredibly patient this past year with me teaching my son from home, so I wanted to pour my heart into this party for her. Each night for two weeks I spent on her special day. Some nights the kids helped me. I enjoyed those moments the best. Without further ado, I want to dive into the details and share some amazing small shops that I used for her unicorn birthday.
You are Personally Invited
How are you invited to a birthday party? Is your invitation mailed or sent via text or email? I think texting and emailing is just the way of the future for party invites. For me, if I do not put it into my calendar right away, I forget about the party. At least when an invitation was sent, I would have it on the fridge as a constant reminder. Yet, I chose to text my daughters party invitation to her 4th birthday. It was partially because we were on vacation and it was the easiest way to reach everyone. How cute is this Unicorn party invitation from Lovely Baby Printables? She was able to customize the invitation for me and then send it to me in a digital format. I chose to use it digitally, but you can have it printed as well.
The Candy Cart
First up, I wanted to have a candy cart as the backdrop of her party. Did you know that candy stands range from $275 plus delivery for just a rental to $400 to $1,500 to buy one? Well I did not. We had a vegetable stand my husband made for the kids in the backyard and it was the perfect starting point to transform it into a candy cart. I spray painted it white and purchased a wheel from amazon that I also painted white. We added a piece of wood to the top of the cart for the candy to sit on. My husband used white pieces of wood on the side to give it a finished look. On top of the candy cart, I made homemade popcorn and put a handful in a plastic sleeve and then inside a white box.
On display, I also had Unicorn Cotton Candy from The Cotton Candy Shop. My kids had one each before the party even began. They were so good. The shop individually wrapped each of the cotton candy sticks and customized the label for me.
To complete the look of the candy cart, Mi Casa Su Casa made a custom wood cut out for me. The wood cut out said Giuliana’s Sweet Shop and I chose to keep the natural wood.
Decorations
I usually have my dining room table setup for the dessert table, but with covid, I wanted everyone to enjoy it, so I decorated outside. I used my patio table for the dessert table. I purchased a photography stand, which I used to display my backdrop of streamers, balloons and wood cut-out. It was extremely windy that day and it kept blowing the photography stand over, so we actually had to tie it down.
I wanted to incorporate the rainbow unicorn theme, but used more muted colors. I tied the different colored streamers to a ribbon and hung it on the photography pole. I then used heavy thread to hand the “Four ever a Unicorn” wood cut-out. I used thread because you wouldn’t be able to use it. The wood cut-out was from Team Three Arrows. The package arrived in perfect condition and was beautifully made. It made for the perfect backdrop to her unicorn birthday. I just loved how it popped in front of the streamers.
What do kids love most about parties? The candy! The pinata for her birthday was a unicorn made by APINATA4ULLC. This pinata was constructed incredibly well and I was very pleased. You can purchase the pinata string separately and I would highly recommend it. The pinata was approximately 23″ tall 4″ deep. The kids used their
Dessert Table
The backdrop set the tone of the table and I was so happy with how it came out. The floral arrangement was from Bloomsybox. The arrangement is still looking beautiful one week later. The colors were just exceptional and contrasted so nicely with the decor. I used different sized pedestals for the table. With the help of my son, who is my fabulous assistant, we made the chocolate covered pretzels and candy kabobs. I used pretzel sleeves for both the pretzel logs and kabobs. I wanted everything to be individually wrapped.
One of the most eye catching desserts was the Cotton Candy Unicorn Magic Cake from Floss Cotton Candy. Not only do they make Cotton Candy Cakes, but they also make favors as well. They recommend plastic to go containers if people wanted to take them home. I absolutely loved cutting into the cake, it was so beautiful and tasted equally as good.
My daughter absolutely loves cake pops. Every time we go to Starbucks, she has to have a chocolate cake pop, so naturally i had to have them for her birthday. Delightful Treats and Toppers owns an amazing Etsy shop and certainly outdid themselves with the Unicorn Cake Pops.
Our Outfits
The birthday girls beautiful dress is from Rology Store on Etsy. I was so satisfied with the purchase of the Unicorn dress and how well it was made. It was a relatively cold day for May, so I made a personalized jean jacket for my daughter adorned with her name, a unicorn and stars. I have a full tutorial and supply list on my instagram. My daughter just glowed in the dress and felt like a princess. She allowed me to do her hair that day, which was a huge accomplishment for us. I put a high pony in her hair and added a Pastel Rainbow Unicorn Bow by Little Lady Head Bandz. I also purchased beautiful unicorn earrings for her special day. She couldn’t have been more appreciate of her special gift.
My youngest daughter wore a rainbow tulle dress with a jean jacket. I wore a tulle blush skirt with a silk cami and jean jacket. We all accessorized with a Unicorn Headband from Govillon. It was the perfect size for not only the girls but myself. She was kind enough to supply you all with a coupon code for 15% off your purchase of $15 or more with 15OFF15.
Gifts
The one gift that my daughter had on her list for over a year was a baby doll that eats playdough. Have you ever had one for your child? I have to say, my little girl knows what she wants. She kept her birthday theme and gift consistent for an entire year.
My mom always gave me sentimental and special gifts that I will forever treasure. I put her gifts in paper boxes that could be used in her closet and serve multiple purposes. Inside the boxes was a Gold Unicorn Necklace from Charm Philosophy, unicorn earrings and unicorn clothes. Charm Philosophy was able to personalize her necklace with her initial, which was a really cute added touch. You can use AMANDA20 at checkout to save 20% on most items in their store.
My daughter also loves pampering. I took her for a manicure the day before her birthday, just the two of us. I can’t tell you how long its been since we have done something just her and I. I gave her a Unicorn Bath Bomb Gift Set from The Bliss Box Co. The personalized unicorn gift box includes two cotton candy scented handmade bath bombs (4.6 oz each), 3 oz jar unicorn bath salts, two “unicorn hair don’t care” hair ties and a personalized card addressed to her.
When the party was said and done, my kids jumped a little more in the bounce house, watched their sister open gifts and they played with their play dough from the Creative Creation Station. They each were given a Unicorn Playdough Kit. All of the kids include 9 ounces of homemade, non-toxic playdough, Unicorns, jeweled wand, assorted charms and beads and acrylic gems. She is offering my readers 10% off with the code LivingwithAmanda.
The Kids Table
I wanted a low table for the kids to sit at because they are little. I also wanted it to special for my little girl. We used two pieces of plywood for the table. I used a blush piece of material for the table runner, vintage candle holders and blush candle sticks. Each place setting also had a wood rainbow or wood unicorn to paint. I gave each child a Unicorn Favor Box from Amelias Papery. I have never seen such a beautiful box with such detail. She also personalized the tag with “Thank you for making my birthday magical Love, Giuliana”. The box came fully assembled and was ready to use.
I also want to give a huge shout out to my mom, Giuliana’s grandma. She was the reason this party was possible. She helped take care of the kids at night while I prepared for Giuliana’s birthday. She is the most selfless woman I know and drops everything to always help us. Thank you so much mom. We love you.
My daughter was so deserving of a day surrounded around her. She is so caring and giving to others all the time. She is the first to get someone a bandaid or ask how we are doing. I usually have to tend to my oldest son first each day as he attends school from home and she is very patient in waiting for my attention. I think it is so important for each of my children to know how much they are loved and cared for individually. I hope she looks back on these photographs and smiles in knowing how much she is loved. Mama loves you so much. Happy 4th Birthday baby girl.
