I absolutely love family photos, but as the kids get older, they are getting more difficult for us to take them. It takes a lot of effort to coordinate everyones outfit and then find the perfect time to take the photos so it is not disturbing someones nap. Do you know what I mean? Even when you think you have selected the perfect time, you always need to be prepared for something to unfold.
For these family photos, I chose the girls dresses first and then coordinated everyone else to follow. The girls dresses had trees on them, which went with the Christmas Tree Farm theme for the photos. I went with a green lace dress and then my son and husband wore more neutral tones. The girls outfits brought everyones outfits together with my husband and son in neutrals and their green dresses matching my outfit. Sometimes you can find the pieces you need hidden in your closet, but with my kids still being so young, we usually have to buy something new.
I worked with Kitti Schwab Photography and found the perfect local tree Farm for our family photos. We actually did a trial run with the kids, which was great because our middle baby girl wasn’t feeling the shoot that day. You can plan everything down to the outfits, but if the kids aren’t feeling it, sometimes there is not much you can do. Even candy doesn’t sway my kiddos! You just have to go with the flow and what happens, happens.
I picked up a wreath from my local Home Depot for the shoot. I thought it would make a nice addition to the photo of my husband and I. Even my son wanted in on this photo, which I thought was incredibly sweet.
For the family photo, we began as a family of five and one reindeer. Yes, the only way to get my daughter in the photo without screaming was with a stuffed reindeer. After a few photos capturing our newest addition of the family, we were able to remove the reindeer. The reindeer now had a new job, which was to fly and get my daughters attention that way. Thank goodness my photographer is one of my oldest and dearest friends; otherwise I am not sure how this would have been accomplished. Is anyone relating to me as of yet? Please tell me you are.
After all of that, I let out a big sigh of relief. At the end of the day, it didn’t matter if we had five smiling faces or not in the photo. What mattered most was that we captured a moment we would hold onto forever and we will have a photo we look back on for years to come.
