The holidays are over and the new year has begun. Christmas is never long enough for my family and I. We make so many memories and have so much fun decorating. I always say that it’s not about the decor, but the act of decorating, the cookies being baked and the laughter being had that is most important.
All good things have to come to and end and it is now time to pack up the Christmas decor. It makes the kids and I sad, but if it were up all year long, it wouldn’t be so special. I put together a list of some tips to transition you through packing up Christmas and into the Winter season.
- Look through all your Christmas decor that you didn’t put out this year. Sift through the unused items and see if there is anything you want to get rid of or donate. There is also the option to sell the unused items. I used marketplace of Facebook or even eBay.
- Take down the Christmas decor being displayed in your home. You can leave up faux pine trees, pine swags, pine wreaths, pine cones and even your green pillows. TIP: Sift through your red decor and see if any pieces could also work for the next holiday, Valentine’s Day. Red towels, pillows and throw blankets could all be used for the next holiday. (These items are called transitional pieces and can be brought from Christmas through the winter season. Make sure to leave an empty box for these items when winter is over.
- Separate all of your items based upon the area of the home they are used in: kitchen, dining, living room, children’s room and package them accordingly. I use a label machine and label the exterior of the boxes (Christmas: Dining room, Christmas: bedroom, Christmas: kitchen).
- After the Christmas decor has been stored away, it is now time to take a look around your house and go through your every day items. I will look around our home and see if their are items that I no longer need or want. While I say this, our home has also gone through the Christmas toy tornado and I have to sift through items myself to make room for the new toys.
- Make a keep, sell and trash piles. You can also store the items for a while and if you don’t use them in a matter of a year, you can then do away with them as you wish.
- Earn money to buy new items! With the items I sell, I am then able to buy new items for my home. It’s a win, win! I get rid of the clutter and I am able to purchase new home decor.
At this stage, you have now packed away your Christmas decor, purged through your existing home decor and you are left with a clean slate. I still have my greenery from Christmas displayed until I transition to my Valentine’s Day decor.
TIP: You can even leave your Christmas tree out a little longer by leaving it bare without ornaments. Take the bows off your wreaths and leave them bare as well to showcase them through winter. I love pieces that can go from one season to the next.
You should now be organized and fully transitioned for the season.
