My kids absolutely love Playdough. I put placemats on the dining room table (the ones that grip and don’t move). I lay out all their Playdough accessories and we have such a good time.
With homemade Playdough, it is non-toxic and I don’t have to be nervous about the little ones playing with it and mistakenly putting it in their mouth. The kids also have been known for mixing all the colors together and leaving us with only an interesting shade of brown. It’s nice to be able to go to the cabinet and whip up a batch of new playdough so they can work with bright and fun colors.
I really loved making the Valentine’s Day colors with them. I got out our Valentine’s Day cookie cutters and they used my bug rolling in and pretended to make cookies and heart pizza. They had so much fun and I hope you do too.

2.5 cups water
1 1/4 c. salt
1 1/2 tbsp. cream of tartar
5 tbsp. vegetable oil
2.5 cups flour
Food coloring (red, pink and brown)
Directions
- Mix water, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large pot until it combines in a ball. It will be lumpy. Not to worry, the dough will get smoother as it cooks.
- Remove the dough from the pot and kneed until smooth and combined.
- Place the dough on a counter top or cutting board and divide into 4 balls or however many colors you will be using. I divided mine into four balls and then placed three balls into plastic baggies (three because I left one plain).
- Inside each of the bags flatten the top of the dough and drop a dot of food coloring then seal the bag. Then kneed the food coloring in. I added more food coloring if needed. You can always add, but can’t take it out, so just add a little at a time until your desired color is achieved. I chose red and pink and I used cinnamon to get the brown color. I left one without any food coloring.
- Use right away. Store in food safe containers or a zip-loc plastic baggie. You can also use canning jars.
